What
is Precious Metal Clay?
Metal
Clay, often referred to as Precious Metal Clay (PMC) or Art Clay, is a
revolutionary new material developed in Japan by Mitsubishi
Materials. Metal Clay is made up of tiny particles of pure silver
or gold which are suspended in a non-toxic organic binder to create a
material that can be worked like modeling clay. The clay, in it’s
unfired form, can be worked with the fingers and clay modeling tools to
create a vast range of forms and surfaces that would be unattainable or
laborious with traditional metalworking techniques.
After the clay has taken on the desired form, it is fired in a kiln at
high temperatures to burn off the binder and fuse the metal. The
result is a solid, 100% pure silver or gold object. After firing,
the solid metal can be sanded, soldered, colored and polished like
conventional metal.
This is a wonderful new medium and allows
both experienced and inexperience individuals to create fine silver
jewelry from clay. This medium brings metal working to those who may
not have the materials or tools to do traditional silver work.
I offer both private
and public PMC instruction, material sales and firing service.
Firing
Service
I
offer firing service for metal clay using my Sierra kiln. The
cost is $5.00 (plus shipping) for 1 ounce of finished clay
(approximately 18 grams). For pieces incorporating dichroic glass, the
cost is $7.00 (plus shipping) for 1 ounce of finished clay. Please

PMC Classes
Each
class is $45 per student. There is a minimum of 5 students and a
maximum of 8 students per class. This will ensure that all work can be
fired during the class break. Private one on one
classes are available. Please contact me at
Laurie@Froginthemoon.com for additional
details.
- Classes can be
offered at my studio or another location.
- Each class will take
the student through the process of working with PMC from start to
finish.
- All classes can be
offered as either a full day work shop (5 hours including a 1 hour
lunch break) or can be offered as two 2 hour sessions.
- Cost includes firing
and use of all workshop supplies. Students are not required to bring
any supplies or tools to class unless they so choose.
- Cost of class does
not include clay and other non-reusable materials. These can be
purchased as kits from me during class. The price of the kit depends
upon the class and the amount of materials required.
- Handouts on all
projects are provided
- Additional clay and
firing service is available if students choose to do additional
projects outside of the class.

Rings in One Day

and wear it home the same day! We will use
a material called Precious Metal Clay to create a pure silver ring. Precious Metal Clay is fine silver particles
embedded in clay that fuse into pure silver when fired in a kiln. You will learn how to size your ring and set a
semi-precious gemstone to make rings that fit you and your style. Come with your imagination and go home with a
